College Hoops 2K9 Canned

by JonahFalcon| Published: Monday, January 14 @ 17:48:33 EST

In shocking news, College Hoops 2K9 has been cancelled due to a conflict with Collegiate Licensing Company.

2K Sports has decided not to continue negotiations with the CLC for the license for its top-rated College Hoops franchise, which would have been released next in November 2008,” said 2K Sports in a statement. “We are committed to providing fans with high-quality, critically acclaimed sports games, but given our disciplined approach to the business, we do not believe the current discussions would result in an acceptable outcome.”

2K Games provided no other details on the negotiation climate, but Kotaku reports that the reason for the breakdown in talks was outside influence from Take-Two rival Electronic Arts, which releases its own multiplatform annualized college hoops series, NCAA March Madness. EA and the CLC had not responded to requests for comment as of press time.

This shocking news may leave the inferior EA Sports March Madness game as the only college hoops game come November.

now while I do not like B-Ball, I assume EA will rush in and lock them down like they did everything else..

I really like 2K, they are great. Especially sticking to their guns over this

2K College Hoops was a highly superior game to EA's March Madness.
Really sad that 2k has lost again:first NFL, and now college bball.
Monopolies in games are NOT a good thing. Competition keeps the companies honest in producing a competitive product that gives gamers more of what they want.

Don't forget that EA has exclusive rights over college football too. I hate feeling like a sucker every year for buying NCAA football when it only has marginal "improvements". I still buy it though. I guess I am a sucker!

Eventually someone is going to come along and start threatening to revoke major sports leagues status as exempt from anti-trust laws. If you look at the level to which the NFL and others are going to lock their content into exclusive deals, both online, in games and in video. It's really kind of sick.

I used to be able to tune into my local AM's net feed of Browns games. This year? You have to pay the NFL and listen to their microphone monkeys if you want to stream the game.

Competition is good.

2KSports has been kickin EA's butt on the basketball court for years. Now EA has resorted to paying off the referees. I guess EA wants to force that crappy March Madness game on us since we wont buy it. I'm playing College Hoops 2K8 right now and its very good. In my opinion better than NBA2K8. I'll just have to hold on and see how this will effect other 2k games. Maybe they'll release All Pro Basketball 2K9.

It's easier to do a generic college basketball game because:

1. not allowed to use real names anyway
2. you can use almost every college, just not the logos or fight music

I too hate to see this, its bad enough we lost the NFL series that I liked not only because they put it out cheaper....but I did enjoy the game play overall. Damn them for not letting us decide what we want to pay for and play.
