Childhood Gaming: What Games Would You Like Re-Made?

by codemonkey| Published: Thursday, June 14 @ 11:23:36 EDT
Many of us older gamers grew up in a time when video games were 8-bits in size. Heck, many of us grew up when video games were just circuit boards with fancy wood siding. Unlike some technologies, such as the invention of the automobile or television you don't have to be an elder to recall the history of video games and their impact on you and those around you.

A gamer in their mid-thirties can say "I remember the days when..." and recall great times. This is because the video game industry is young compared to other industries. I don't remember when we first invented the string factory, walking stick or the first bonfire but I do remember the Nintendo Entertainment System, Genesis and 3DO.

What was the one game you remember as a kid that has died with the ages? At first, I'd say The Legend of Zelda because of its impact on me as a kid. My neighbor had the game way before I was able to get it and I would just watch him play in amazement at the creative powers of Zelda. How it looked so huge and expansive without an ending in sight.

Now, I believe I can conquer classic NES zelda in four hours of dedicated playtime. Things have changed.

Alas, Zelda isn't the title I could pick because they continue with the series so it's really not dead. Sure, the original feeling has long since passed--no new Zelda game has given me that same urge to play.

The same can be said for Metroid. It still lives on in one form or another. What then, would you choose?

Here are a few I'd long to see again ranked in the order of yearning:
  1. Red Baron (PC)
  2. Shadowgate (PC/NES)
  3. WWF Wrestling: The Arcade Game
  4. River City Ransom (NES)
  5. Maniac Mansion (NES)
  6. Top Gear (SNES)
  7. N.A.R.C (arcade)
  8. Where in Time is Carmen Sandiego? (MAC)
  9. Spy vs. Spy (NES)
  10. Pool of Radiance (PC)
  11. R.C Pro-Am (NES)
  12. Pro Wrestling (NES)
  13. Iron Tank (NES)
  14. Wizardry (PC)
  15. Ikari Warrios (NES)
Those are just a few. I know, if they were to be re-designed for todays gaming, they just wouldn't give me the same feeling. Do I dislike side-scrollers or "old school" games? No way! But I'm not a kid anymore and I don't know if I'd have that same feeling as I did as a child.

When I say "re-designed" I am not talking about a game port or "virtual game" emulated on new hardware. Bring back the same characters using a fresh 2D engine, but with new graphics and surround sound and new adventures, stages and challenges.

Do you think that would sell in todays market? Or are we all just hyped up for the next huge graphic advancement?

I believe my game list tells you a lot about my personality. I like a wide array of games, some to make me think, others are purely simulators, while others are mindless shooting games.

What would your list look like?

More then anything I want a remake of Sid Meier's Covert Action. It was a spy game and was one of the first stealth action games. It's truly one of those you have to experience to appreciate it, and you can since it's abandonware thanks to Dosbox and The Home of the Underdogs.

Something simple, like Warlords, where four people can throw down on a single screen, but, of course, with XBox Live, each would have a 3-D veiw of the other combatants.

More than this, though, I would like to see a game like Doom where players can create their own single player levels. Imagine the ability to create a map, as with Far Cry, but populate it for campaign play.

I bought Kid Icarus on my Wii in order to relive the memory. But alas, I relived the horror.

Apparently I had some recessed memories about how hard that game was and didn't realize it. Now, as an adult I find it's just as hard as when I was a kid.

It's sorta how you look back at high school with fond memories but realize the only thing you remember are the good times, not the boring classes, sitting for an hour in detention, school yard fights and peer pressure. Once you take a look at the whole picture you realize why smoking up and drinking in college was a completely better scenario to relive.

I feel that way about Kid Icarus.

I'd have to say that we need remakes of Sunset Riders, Rock 'n' Roll Racing, Final Fight 2, and Turtles in Time. They need to do it like what is being done with Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo HD Remix where it's just brand new illustration but keep the same perspective, style, etc. Update physics and weaponry and stuff, but don't go into the whole crazy 3D kinda stuff that happens with so many remakes of classic titles.

Personally I would love to see a remake or a true sequel to Wing Commander. Especially if it's a follow on to Privateer. I can't say the number of hours I spent playing the first 5 wing commander games and the original privateer. It was by far the majority of my gaming time before I fell prey to MMO's with Ultima Online.

In fact Privateer would be a great backdrop for an MMO. It's a pitty that EA dismantled Origin and lacks the creative leadership to make such a game. I know that kind of sounds like what Eve online was aiming for but that game is more a re-visioning of UO with a Z axis than it is a real space flight sim based MMO.

Maybe it's a good thing that CCP didn't add wing commander flight dynamics to their game though. That would seriously hurt my Xbox360 time :)

Along the same vein, the X-Wing and Tie Fighter games would be good candidates for modern remakes. Take the strong single player campaign of X-Wing and Tie Fighter, marry it to the strong multi-player skirmishes of X-Wing vs. Tie Fighter add a dash of modern graphics and a generous portion of Xbox Live and you have the recipe for a lot of hours spent playing by a lot of people.

I don't generally get all nostalgic about old games. I loved them in their day, but playing them again usually doesn't excite me. I put in hours on intellivision, but when I look at those games today I have no interest in playing them. I own Atari Arcade and Midway Arcade for Dreamcast and find I never play them.

That said, there are a few games I would love to see remade for PS3/Xbox360:

(1) Space Hulk - The 3DO version of this game was simply awesome. I can still here "Ezekiel! Azrael!" and other such lines in my sleep. This is the one game that makes me want to buy a 3DO on ebay (mine broke).

(2) PO'ed - This was a great FPS that had some nice twists. It sold well on the 3DO, not so well on the PSX. I'd love to see an update to it.

I can't think of any game other than those that I'd really like to play again. Space Hulk though, that would rock. "GLORY!"

One of the ones I'd really been hoping for IS getting remade -- Final Fantasy IV. I was PUMPED when I heard the treatment they're giving that great game.

Also in the RPG vein, Chrono Trigger and (to second someone else's suggestion) Secret of Mana. SoM was a great game, but even then it could have used a little polish (don't get me wrong... I still loved it!).

And, I know it was said Zelda doesn't really count, but I'd like to suggest Zelda II: The Adventure of Link. They really haven't made any Zelda game like it since then, and though not everyone was crazy about it, I loved it, and I'd love to see a remake of it. I'd even be okay if it wasn't was an updating but rather a total remake, kind of like Tomb Raider Anniversary, but hopefully keeping the same feel of the game.

At the time I rented it (1995), I thought it was way too hard, but I just wasn't ready for anything other than "move to the right" at the time, I guess. I tried it againg a couple of years ago and I love it!

You can move in one direction, shoot in the other, and even control your cyber bike and have it fire all at the same time. There was an unfortunate glitch/flaw that made it literally impossable to beat the game on hard because there was a missing hover-ledge. If anyone knows a way around this let me know. :D
