Call of Duty 5: World at War Trailer

by codemonkey| Published: Monday, June 23 @ 15:10:41 EDT

Ready for another World War II battle? Well, this time it's on in the Pacific Theatre, an area we've not seen too many next-generation FPS's, this may be great...

Perhaps we're not the only ones that believe the Call of Duty series manages to make you "feel" as if you're in battle and not simply playing a video game. The next in the series, developed by Activision Treyarch, brings us to the Pacific Theatre where we'll blow fire upon the enemies and rummage through earth soaked lands to stop our enemies.

The trailer gives us a feel for what they're aiming for in the next series release. A few of us thought they'd stick with the modern battle feel for longer than this, but let's face it, modern combat today is battling in a desert. It get's old fast.

Call of Duty 4 was nothing but amazing with solid multiplayer out of the gate, this trailer gives you a sense of the battle environments and intensity but doesn't give us a clear picture on their multi-player functionality. However, we're assuming it will be nothing less than their last hit title.

Yes Trey arch has one last chance to make it right. They better not screw up COD5 which I am sure they are working on since the release of COD3. I love the WW2 genre...hopefully it will be cool

COD4 plays nothing like GRAW. Only comparison is current weapons. COD4 did remind me of COD3, (as I suppose it should). The AI pushing you forward, yelling out alot of same and simular "sugestions".
Will differant local make this WWII shooter stand out from COD3? Or will this just mean differant maps to play on and differant looking cloned enemys?

We'll just have to wait and see.

Looks great, but the gameplay will need to be better. I also keep asking myself how many times will I pick up a game involving a war that I already know the outcome of. That was the only reason why I bought COD4 was because it was a fictional battle based off of current tech. I wasn't buying a game to experience storming the beaches of Normandy when I already knew what happened. If I want to relive that again I'll pop in Saving Private Ryan.

COD 4 has some pretty silly features to it. Martyrdom for instance is the most idiotic thing about COD4. The little adds like double tap, extra speed and such make the game really annoying to me. Keeping things on a level playing field is what makes the gameplay of other FPS's so much more fun. Knowing that I can jump as high, stop as many bullets, or move as fast as everyone else I'm playing with offers a level playing field. There's also no need for 100 different types of guns. A basic weapon set available to all players is sufficient. Let's face it, there were only a limited number of weapons available in WWII.

Being able to gain the advantage before the game starts by offering special weapons to already better players is pretty stupid.

There should also be a better ranking and matchmaking system that pairs you up with people of equal or similar skill. Getting into a game with people that have Prestiged 5 times is a surefire way to have people drop your game as I did because you're fighting people and getting destroyed without knowing why or how.

There also needs to be more freedom within the maps to get into places that offer more cover and easier access. In the current mapset it's frustrating to run around looking for a way to gain cover knowing that you should be able to get into a spot but the game won't allow you to.

What are you talking about!? First of all you don't necessarily unlock "better" weapons as you rank up, you unlock more weapons. You start with the M16 which is arguably the best gun in the game.

Secondly, different is not unfair (or un-level to use your terminology). The game requires you to make choices about what perks you want, and they are pretty well balanced. If you want to do some extra damage (stopping power) you have to give up the opportunity to sustain more damage (juggernaut). Giving players meaningful, but balanced choices is the holy grail of good game design. COD4's perks system does this very well.

Third if you are going to make a statement about a game feature (negative or positive) you need to back it up with some evidence or reasoning. You can't just make a statement like "Martyrdom ... is the most idiotic thing about COD4." and not tell us why you say that. (Well I guess you can, but then I'm going to think you aren't a good critical thinker and that you don't make any good arguments and therefore I should not believe anything you say.)

Fourth there are not 100 types of guns. There are assault rifles, LMGs, SMG's , snipers, and shotguns. That is 5 types of guns. I don't know how it could get any more basic and still allow any kind of choice for the player.

Also, what do you mean by "There also needs to be more freedom within the maps to get into places that offer more cover and easier access. In the current mapset it's frustrating to run around looking for a way to gain cover knowing that you should be able to get into a spot but the game won't allow you to"? This makes no sense to me.

That said. I do agree that a matchmaking system would be a great boon to many, many, many games including COD4. Games are supposed to be fun, and it is not fun to get your ass handed to you. It is also not fun (for very long anyway) to decimate an opposing team without any real competition.

I also agree that the WWII setting is pretty played out. Modern weapons are much more interesting. Future weapons might be even more interesting, especially if they are near-future based on current proto-types and not too sci-fi.

Ok. Thanks for the insults.

Martyrdom - Your opponent instantly drops a grenade. This requires no additional effort of the player other than to select this option. REDICULOUS.

Cover areas of the maps - You make your way into a building only to have a stairway blocked by a bedframe or a lamp that could easily be stepped over by a normal person, but in the COD4 universe it's like a GIANT BRICK WALL. IGNORANT. I'm simply saying that there should be more freedom to overcome obstacles and gain cover. I should be able to step over boulders and piles of gravel. They shouldn't restrict the freedom of movement in the map. They WERE looking for more REALISM here weren't they?It also shows just how much work goes into the game when the game itself hasn't even been on the shelf for a full year and the next game is far enough along to show what they just did in the trailer. Not to mention that the maps are just sections of gameplay cut from the campaign.

Weapons - There are 40 different ones. NOT 5. There are several different sites and grips and color schemes. YAY! MY GUN CAN HAS CAMO! YAY YAY YAY! THAT'S GREAT. If you want to pair people up that are beginners at the game against people with a superior weaponset and less "perks" how is that an even and level playing field? It's assinine.

UAV's etc. - "Our UAV is Online...Our UAV is Airborne" That is the most annoying and repetitive sound in the game. We're getting beat. Let's call in an airstrike. Seriously? Why not have ninjas or Samurais in the WWII setting. They can come crashing through the forest with Tom Cruise at command and you get a bonus "perk" if you cut off their Top Knot. Watch out for flaming arrows. Catch their captain and cut off his head while he stabs himself in the chest. And don't forget to bow.

I know alot on here hate the WW 2 game senerios. I love it! Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed COD 4. But on a personal level, I find WW 2 on of the most captivating periods in human history, not to mention US History. Yes, I agree, there are alot of other wars to touch base with, even for a one game tribute. Is WW 2 being played out, maybe, but I'd take a flame thrower over a sub machine gun with an acog scope anyday. This trailer was great! I can't wait until the end of the year now.

Love the good WW2 games. Yes, it was a captivating time in history. The continued making of cheap games by moderately talented developers looks more like pulishers exploitation of probably the most pivotal time in modern history. If you're going to publish a WW2 game get a master game maker to pay tribute to the time, not a bunch of scrubs to make another rehash.

I do agree there is more opposition and dread when "yet another WW2" title gets announced. Although, WW2 genre is no more packed with garbage titles and knock offs than any other game genre. How many Sci-fi shooters do we get per year and how many are bad and cliched? Probably way more. So why the WW2 game hate?

My guess is there might be a little more to it with WW2 games if its meet with more dread than other seemingly unoriginal game releases. Maybe its more about taking a serious subject and putting out mediocrity to make a few bucks that is what really puts off more people?

I am disappointed by the choice to go back to a WWII setting. Been there done that. It was one of the main reasons for not purchasing the other CODs.

Broken lobby system and host issues aside.....Infinity Ward did a great job with the game. They managed to keep the game and weapons balanced while still keeping a high degree of customization.

By this I don't mean digi camo. I mean that you can adjust your playing style and loadout to each map. Each perk forces you to sacrifice another perk. There is no ultimate setup, that's the beauty of it.

I'm not sure what the other poster trying to get at. too much customization, not enough.....which is it?? Oh, look at my custom character with the pink hyabusa shoulders!!! congrats.

Yes, there are quite a few guns, but most of them are very similar hence the 5 categories. Within those categories it basically comes down to personal preference and gun sexiness.

As far as using crates and boxes to block off the map.....That's just a way to make the game aesthetically appealing so that every path doesn't end with a blank wall. We've come a ways since doom. While big open empty levels are fun for MLG games etc., many people like the eye candy of COD4. Yes, the maps are more detailed than most, and offer lots more cover and ways to get around, but they're not beyond learning. It just takes more than a few hours + see the next point.

Yes, many of the maps came from the single player. is there a point here? So we get like 12 great maps out of the box, I'm not sure what the problem is here. Especially since the game you are obviously comparing it to came with what like 4??

In summary: great game. why not just improve it here and there with some tweaks and new MM code and then call it COD5? a certain other series has done it with good success.

First of all, you need to realize that COD4 and 5 are made by two different developers so to say that 4 wasn't up to par because look how far 5 is in development is just incorrect.

And to say that modern combat is all about desert warfare!!?!?! Have you even played COD4? There are myriad options out there for combat scenarios that aren't in a desert setting.

I wouldn't mind a WWII shooter if properly done, but I'd rather have something else. I'm waiting for the next installment that IW does. Lets just hope COD5 hold me over until then.

It's clear the CoD series cruises on each year with a new release because they've got two independent teams working on the efforts. NCSoft did this with the Guild Wars series of games as well, it works.

Mainly because each team has a different perspective on the title and each one has its own unique feel (for good or bad). Everyone has their own perspective, while some like IW's approach others like Treyarch's, but having both teams constantly building titles means everyone gets what they want in roughly a two-year window.

I can't find fault in that. Imagine if Madden had two teams trying to out-do each other year to year. It would be like internal competition for the most awesome. That's about the only way we get competition in that genre lately ;-)

I've not personally be disappointed with any Call of Duty title since I start playing them on the 360 with CoD2.
