Call of Duty 5, They’ve Found Success

by codemonkey| Published: Monday, May 12 @ 17:10:17 EDT

Believe it or not, Call of Duty 4’s success may have something to do with re-igniting the franchise by taking it out of the stone age… or World War 2 setting. Now, Activision sees a successful new road map for the series and will be doing it again from a different military theatre.

Call of Duty 5 will build on the franchise success while the iron is hot by designing Call of Duty 5 in it’s image (again, no WW2 it seems) and releasing it across a wide array of consoles: Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC, Nintendo DS, Wii and …PS2.

The Wii and PlayStation 2 consoles are great targets for a new game because everyone and their grandmother has one of these older styled consoles. Graphics might not match that of a PS3 or 360 but when it comes down to sheer numbers, money talks. If I were trying to sell as many units of a game as possible I’d start with the console that has the most number of units in the field; it’s a sensible decision.

CoD4 didn’t arrive on the PS2 or Wii so they may have lacked some sales, but the fourth game in the franchise, by sequel number anyway, still blew away sales figures for many months in a row. Imagine the power of the franchise on the two consoles everyone seems to own.

“We’ll bring the intensity of the recent Call of Duty: Modern Warfare title to a new military theatre to engage our significantly larger user base which nearly doubled last year as new users came into the franchise,” added Activision Publishing CEO Mike Griffith.

Translation: “Holy crap, people like Modern Warfare and must be sick of the seven thousand World War 2 shooters on the market today.”

Don’t get me wrong, World War 2 was a huge event in our worlds history and it’s great to respect, remember and keep it strong. However, you can only see so many interpretations of the same events before you want to see something different.

I was sick to death of WWII shooters. I wish they can make a game like BF2 for PC with much more players and vehicles this time around.

What about "different theatre" = non-WWII? (Score: 1)

I hope that Kotaku and others are wrong, but it appears that the game is in the finishing phases and that it is going to be set in the Pacfic theatre during WWII.

Kotaku reported earlier today that,

"Call of Duty 5 Already Playable

Sources tell us that the upcoming Call of Duty 5 game in development is already playable, and currently going through quality assurance.

Treyarch is also said to be the developer, and the title, we're told, is set in a WWII Pacific environment and will be using Call of Duty 4's engine, the same engine on which the upcoming James Bond: Quantum of Solace movie game is being built."

Why can't they do Vietnam? They could make a TON of interesting battles from that alone. I think we fought WW2 so many different times it's not funny. Hmmm....what about doing a not too distant future WW3 game? They could actually put in prototype weapons and that would be bad ass.

Wii is an older styled console? I am not a fan of the Wii (or its selection of games) and tell my friends that it is a waste of money, but even I don't put it in the same category as a PS2. =P

Still want to see a American Revolution or Civil War FPS.

Now that would be different!

is developing the game. It will be total crap. I will wait around for COD 6. Good thing there are plenty of other great games coming out this fall.

What I dont like about the cutscenes is that they are cartoonish unlike the real video from COD2 and previous COD's. I personally like the WW2 shooters and until COD2 nobody was doing it right. I hope we dont have to sit through animated cut scenes again in the next COD.

I'm concerned that they will use the same engine with the same mechanics and just change the setting / surroundings.

CoD Afghanistan
CoD Saudi Arabia
CoD Iraq

or...

CoD N. Korea
CoD Pakistan

Then the MP game environment ends up being more of what you've seen, but you get new weapons and abilities to learn over time in each one... or worse, the same abilities and weapons are just packaged into new graphics and fancy names with guys in new uniforms.

I guess what I'm saying is that COD4 brought some innovation to the series - it was more than just a theatre change... new paint alone will only go so far.

+ + +

The next version (in my opinion) needs to keep the innovation alive as well as the theatre change...

1) Take a play from GoW - make the campaign co-op

2) Take a play from newer MP experiences - disable respawn and add interesting MP game types with multiple objectives and more than one way to win each game type i.e. eliminate the enemy, or satisfy the objective. Insert Allow medi-kits or the like to enforce / strengthen team play and planning and coordinated strikes as one life is precious

3) Expand the player customization by forcing the player to pick a given role / class and then allowing them to customize that class, set differences benifits and hinderences in health, speed, accuracy, healing, etc by class. Customization should come in the form of abilities, tech and equipment upgrades. Include some prototype weapons, various types availabe to different classes with modifications available from customization.

4) Oh - and change the theatre and maybe add some new paint AFTER the innovation to the next series has been applied.

Just my thoughts / concerns / interests,

Tac

So, if they make the multiplayer like Halo's, then it should be all good.

I have NO idea why they didn't add Split-Screen multiplayer on Xbox Live. I find it annoying that my friends cant come over and play with me. But you CAN do 4 player splt screen (off line).

They need a way to make a "Pistol" class. So that you benefit from holding only a pistol. ...Like making you sprint ALL the time (or something).

The graphics are GREAT on the 360, but the game NEVER skips. Thus, I think they could have turned the graphics UP and sacrificed a few FPS for even better graphics!
