Boston Mayor Charges Sony for Riots

If you thought you heard it all when it came to the PS3 launch think again. Boston Mayor Thomas Menino plans to bill Sony for PS3 riots.

During Fridays PlayStation 3 release at Copley Plaza the city was forced to call in twelve police cruisers when a frantic crowd of 500 rushed the doors of Sony store at 5 a.m. Many of the customers were believed to be angered by the fact that the Sony store withheld actual console numbers while allowing a mass of people to stand outside and wait.

Menino, believes that Sony helped to provoke the riot by not providing adequate information about console supply in the store as well as little if no security. Menino is now calling that Sony pay for the extra security that they failed to provide.

As crazy as this sounds, it may finally teach some stores a lesson about hyping products. We have all seen how bad it can get with the PS3 launch and all the deaths, reburies, and break ins. Now may not be a bad to time send a message to companies that fail to prepare for events like these.

This has got to be the most assinine and frivilous lawsuit I've seen since the Gun-maker (for columbine) McDonalds (for amking us fat) or Tobacco (for making us smoke) suits. So let me get this straight. 500 people decide to wait in line for a gaming console (that was publisized on every media outlet as being in short supply), make a mad rush when an INDEPENDENT retailer opens the floodgates and the mayor wants to go after SONY because of lack of information, low supply and not providing adequate security for frenzied and crazed gamers crawling all over themselves? While we're at it lets sue SONY for the Robber incident in Putnam, or the stabbing in Sullivan. You have got to be kidding me....another prime example of how the great pussified of amercian society is willing to blame all things external FIRST before, holding the individuals accountable.

Actually, it wasn't an independent retailer. It was a Sony store. You do need to hold a store responsible when they don't give adequate information about how many systems they have. That's just asking for trouble. As is not having enough security at your store. Obviously the individuals themselves are to blame for the actions but it could all have been avoided had Sony acted responsibly in the first place.

Although I agree to some extent with DantezInforno, if, as the article respresents, this was a "Sony" store then some accountability rests with Sony. Certainly I agree that the mood in the US is to blame everyone but the obvious offender, there is some shared responsibility here.

A store, knowing it has a hot item in short supply must take adquate measures to protect its customers, even if it's from other customers.

I would, in addition to charging the Sony store for the needed police resources, would charge each and every "rioting" individual with disorderly conduct and take a portion of the cost from them as well.

This just goes to show that something needs to be done to reform console launches. Every time a new one comes out all this BS goes on. You don't see this for any other product launch. Why do we accept this as norm for the gaming industry? It needs to stop.

Ok guys, I disagree with Sony being the sole responsible party but if the launch was done in an organized and informed manner, there would be zero riots. You get to the line, they tell you what to expect and have an organized line (this alone is they key to civil distribution) with the little known fact that there are 100 units available then person 101 through 500 would go on their merry way knowing they will not get one.

Sony needs all the hype they can get and although this was an ugly way to get some consumer demand, they got the publicity and the demand they want out of the great U.S of A.

Are they responsible? Yes.

I agree, those that riotes should be accountable and prosecuted to the highest measn possible. But I also believe that Sony and any other manufacturer knows that there is a potential for this and that they LIE about the numbers.

Sony has been LIEING about there launch numbers from day one. Let me tell you. These things are built a facility that can tell you how many, in how much time. I say this because I work for such a place, as a matter of fact , I run the assembly department. The facility I run packaging for does all, not some, but ALL of ATI's Packaging. We store the boards, we buy all of their comps, we print all the material,we do all the packaging and we send them to all the stores EVERYWHERE. Now, I can tell you how many an hour of which board I can buils and I can tell you how many people it takes.

I think that maybe Sony should not be liable for the rioting because you are right, we blame everyone else. But the should be liable for the LIES. No company that is in the money making business is just doing this fly by night. I promise you Sony has known for weeks of not months that they would be know where vene in the same timezone as their projections. Shame on them.

Well I think they handled the thing poorly. When my friend waited in line for the 360 they said how many they had of each and handed out tickets. No ticket they didn't want you hanging around. They let him keep his g/f there to swap seats if needed but any extra people were kicked out and saugus pd was right there in the parking lot. They are showing that a lot on the news and it looked like a huge crowd of people instead of a line.

First and foremost, this riot was about greed and money, not "unruly gamers". Most of my friends are not gamers and were going on and on about the "gamers" that caused this riot. IMO, most were not gamers, but people who wanted the system to resell. Hell, we have Gencon here every year and that is one of the most well attended and peaceful conferences we host. So I don't think the majority of gamers, who want a PS3 to play, are prone to riot.

The people who rioted should be in jail. A game system is no "good reason" for a riot, even in a poorly handled situation. The government taking away freedom is a good reason, not a game system. The store management should be charged and jailed. They did not handle the situation...at all. All those people and no one to enforce "first come, first served". Lastly, the issue with Sony is bigger than this one event. I am not in favor of the government stepping in, but if they think steriods in baseball deserves their time, this sure as hell does. Exploiting the situation, CONTRIBUTING to the riots (not causing), etc. To me all of the parties that had a hand in these situations were motivated by greed. No Gordon Geko, greed is not always good.

Lets see here. What did Sony do that was unlawful or even illegal. *crickets*. Ok, good.

Personally I own every single Nintendo system ever made and I despise Sony and Microsoft [and Sega too for whatever that's worth]. But I really don't think Sony should have to pay not even a nickel. If anyone should be paying money it should be those involved with the riot. Instigating or "Inciting" the riot should not be blamed on Sony.

Not to mention even my Grandmother knew PS3's were in short supply. She doesn't watch T.V., read the paper, and I didn't even mention the short supply to her. But she still knew it'd be in short supply.

Seriously I have to agree that this is about as stupid as the "McDonalds made us fat" case, or the "Tabacco co.s make us smoke". Some people seriously dissappoint me with their ignorance and irrationality.

btw, only think I ever liked about PS is their controller....but then again I was always fond of the S.N.E.S. it was designed after.
