BioShock: The Review

by doodirock| Published: Saturday, August 18 @ 16:31:07 EDT

Wow! You're going to be saying that a lot with Bioshock. As I'm sure most of you have already figured, Bioshock is a tour de force that combines gameplay, storyline, and good old fashioned FPS action to create one of the most unforgettable titles in both recent console and PC history. Not since Half-Life 2 has the world seen such a masterful display of art and game. This is BioShock.

You start off your adventures in Rapture as a nameless hero who has just crashed landed in the middle of the ocean. Your only refuge is a large gothic structure that seems to rise up out of the waves just around your planes wreckage. As any good gamer knows, your only option is to swim to the structure and begin the process of investigation; and in Rapture, there is a lot to investigate.

The Look of Rapture

There are two things you will notice about your new under water home as soon as you begin the game. First, the city is gorgeous. Irrational (2K Boston and 2K Australia) did an impressive job with how Rapture combines Art Deco, gothic, and horror elements to create a scary environment where you can’t seem look away. Everything from the water to the marble tiles has a rich polygon count that helps to set Bioshock ahead of more recent Xbox 360 titles. Even more so, the bad guys of Rapture contain fluid animations, detailed models, and unique art direction. A “Big Daddy” is truly something to whiteness and I found myself sometimes just staring at them before inevitably trying to take one down.

ah24

The next thing you will notice is the size of Rapture. It’s Huge. While the game does a fantastic job at steering you in the right direction via arrows and a well made map system, exploring Rapture is half of the fun of playing it. Going off the beaten path can often net you new rewards that help enrich your gaming experience along with creating an even more formidable hero. Half of my entire BioShock experience was spent trying to uncover new items in hidden locations that helped to “buff” my hero’s overall power in the game. The key is to make sure you search every crack of Rapture because you might just uncover something that could make your stay in the underwater city that much easier.

The Story Line

There is only one thing that could be larger then the actual city of Rapture and that is the story line itself. At its core, BioShock pits an unsuspecting hero against the once great Utopian leader, Andrew Ryan. Ryan’s central belief is that all human beings have the right to work and live for the benefit of themselves above anyone else (based of Ayn Rand). While this seems to have worked for a while in Rapture, you arrive at the very end of the city’s life span. Advancements in genetics have allowed citizen to splice their DNA to allow them new abilities to “better” themselves. Unfortunately, many of these abilities have come at the cost of mental sanity and now the inmates are running the asylum. Without spoiling too much of the story, let’s just say that this core plot is expanded upon constantly throughout the games progress.

ah21

Speaking of plot, you have to ask yourself, why would you play a game that has no multi player aspect to it? If there are no people to interact with, what does a single player game need to keep you interested throughout? Bioshock answers this question time and again in two words, Character Development. As you play through, you are constantly given new information about both the history of Rapture and its current state of distress. The history is uncovered by picking up old tape recorded messages left around the city while current info is sent via short wave radio communications with the various characters in the game. The best part about this type of plot delivery is that it all happens while the game moves forward. There is no stopping and waiting for cut scenes. Instead you continue on your given path while listening to the latest intel, history, or plot development. Why break the flow of action when you can be whoop’n on some splicers and getting a history lesson at the same time?

Because of this type of constant plot revision and stunning graphics, you will soon find yourself completely immersed in the world and characters of Ratpure. BioShock uses this immersion to its advantage by playing on themes of morality and right and wrong. Throughout the game you will find yourself having to make tough decisions on how you want to react to a certain situation. Take the Big Daddy for instance. Its soul purpose is to protect the “little sisters” in Rapture while they harvest ADAM from demised victims. If you don’t bother it, you can simply walk on by and let the pair go about their business. The problem is, since you need ADAM to survive your only recourse is to kill the Big Daddy. Does that make it wrong? This same theme is played out after a BD (bid daddy) dies and you have a choice to kill a little sister or save her for less ADAM. The choice is yours.

So What Is ADAM anyway?

Everything in Rapture revolves around the once plentiful ADAM. Now that the city is in decay, ADAM has been the commodity that every splicer, bid daddy, little sister, and hero needs to survive. With it, you are able to “purchase” new abilities, called Plasmids, for your character. This could be in the form of active abilities like shooting fire balls or more passive abilities like taking less damage or better hacking skills. With the hundreds of combination of plasmids you can literally custom create your character how you like. In my most recent session with the game I built my hero to be at the peak of combat skills. Near the end I could resist damage, speed boost with my wrench, and electrocute splicers every time they went to touch me. This of course is only the surface of combat as I don’t want to spoil it all for you.

xdack-image112

Beyond just your Plasmids, are the weapons you receive in Rapture. Each one of then can be customize up to two times with add-ons that help the weapon perform better. Want more damage out of that shotgun? Upgrade it. How about less kickback from the machine gun? Upgrade it. Each weapon can be good or better for any given situation. It all depends on how you upgrade them or what you are looking to use them for.

I’m sure by now you have noticed a theme here. BioShock is totally customizable. This creates a game that is more RPG then FPS. For instance, you can use the city’s own defenses to your advantage by hacking, or just go in guns blazing. It’s all trial and error mixed with personal preference. Since this often creates death in Rapture, BioShock was nice enough to create a fantastic Save Anywhere system. You’ll spend a lot of time trying out new combos of Plasmids to see how they work on enemies and then reloading your last save point to try out new ones. Because of this, it is advisable that you SAVE OFTEN. There is nothing worse then buying a bunch of useless Plasmids only to find that your last save point is 3 maps ago. BioShock is more about testing and re-testing, especially on the hard setting.

You can’t possibly explain every aspect of the game because it is simply that in depth. Doing so would also spoil much of the great discovery that BioShock has to offer. The great part about the world of Rapture is being in Rapture. The single player aspect means figuring out the world for yourself and so no review can truly do the game justice. So, in order to really understand BioShock you need to play BioShock. This is a game in which many games will and should be measured. It’s not another sequel, FPS, or RPG. Instead Irrational has created something totally new out of something familiar. Even if you’re not a fan of the game, it will be impossible to deny that BioShock is not just your average game. Finally a developer has stepped up to create something more then just a Halo 4 or GTA 9. Finally we have BioShock.

9.9/10

The demo was gorgeous and I had fun with it. My only concern is am I going to get bored halfway through with waves of the same type of enemies. I am keeping an open mind though because what I did play of the game was fun I would have just liked to see more AI rather than just running in willy nilly so I can kill them.

Nice review. I'm holding off on this one simply because I'm a giant puss when it comes to games like this, Condemned, Silent Hill, etc and can't play them alone. I'd buy it, play it for maybe 20 minutes til I got chest pains, then put it on the shelf. :)

All in all this is looking like one non MP game that will be pretty popular around here.

This game looks gorgous, sounds like it has a great storyline and I tend to trust Doodi's reviews, the demo gave me a splitting headache...

I'm not sure if it's the lighting or the angles... I'll give the demo some more time to see if the last episode was alcohol related.

This could easily display Oblicrack as the next hot SP game on the 360.

I can see how the game would give you a headache. The sheer amount of stuff going on at one time on screen can be insane. Its also not the easiest game in the world at times. Plasmids, tonics, weapons and ammo all play a huge roll in the game and running into a battle without the right combo can mean constant restarts.

I also didn't mention the whole section of "research" from the bad guys. The more you learn about your enemy's with your trusty camera, the more damage you can do to them. Like I was saying in the review, I can go on and on about the game. In fact, near the end I learned about 3 other things that I could do to add to my character that I didnt even know about. Its just that big.

Now Im sure others will not like it. As with any video game, a review is completely subjective. For me though, the reason I gave it such a high score is simply because I have not sat down and played a game straight through in 2 days in forever. In fact, I can't remember a game that held my attention for so long. I also played it the "moral" way which adds to the overall length are "hardeness" of the game. If you stay completely moral, you get a bit more surprises etc... Again, its all about how you want to play Bioshock.

For me to give it a total 10/10 I would have to say there we not any problems with it. Since their were tiny little issues throughout, I did not give it the same score. I'll list just a couple for you below, but in no way did these affect my over all love of the game...

1) In some places my character would become stuck in the map during important big daddy fights. This might have happened about 3-4 times through out the game.

2) Some of the voice acting from the splicers became repetitive. You could hear them saying the same lines over and over again. Not really a big deal, but it gets annoying after a while.

3) The ending was a little "easy" for my tastes. After having so much trouble through some of the earlier parts of the game, I was surprised to finished the end in one quick sitting.

Thats about it. Im sure there's some other stuff that Im missing, but again I have forgotten about most since the good out weighed the bad by a ton. For some, these issue could be a deal breaker and like i have said in the past, a review is just an opinion. For me though, it has not been since Half-Life 2 that I have tried to complete an entire single player game in one sitting. No other single player game has been able to capture my attention for so quickly and for so long. For this, BioShock is "almost" perfect.

For those that haven't preordered it, you might be shocked to find the initial inventory in some towns already spoken for. I'm sure it won't be an issue for many, but I live in a medium size town and many of the outlets have 80% of their stock spoken for. Oh yeah, as it became clear from ToyRUs selling early, the retailers have the game already, so they know how many they have. EBGames only had 2 of their 12 left after pre-orders as of Saturday. On my first playthrough [on medium] I had to stop playing every 45 minutes or so because this game is so intense. You're constantly overwhelmed by the flood of enemies that just get tougher and tougher, I actually felt like I was trapped in an underwater city surrounded by lunatics that wanted to kill me. By the end of the game I was pretty confident of my skills and started over on hard. Even though I've fought all these guys hundreds of times they still scare the piss out of me, even though I know what's coming I creep around every corner and jump and every sound. Who cares if you just respawn at a vita-chamber when you die, I DON"T WANT TO DIE! Most immersive experience since Breakdown, but not anywhere near as frustrating.

The Big Daddies are just not that tough to beat. I beat several of them without losing a life. HINT: POWER WEAPON... If you die, you just respawn and finish him off. The urge to reload the game and try beating the Big Daddy with full health never over came me. I just found myself wanting to get it over with so I could kill the Little Sister and take her little gelatinous booty. Yea, i kill them all because I don't want to risk having to play the game any longer than I need to. if you put the game on Hard, the AI doesn;t exhibit any tougher patterns to fight against. They just become harder to kill. This is a problem in most FPS games, so I give them a pass on this. I am still disappointed. i was expecting classic chess matches with the Big Daddies.

The game is pretty, but I did not find it to be an incredible, immersive experience. You can look out the window and see the water, skyscapers, and fish, but you are limited action wise to what amounts to another corridor driven FPS game. Each individual section of the game has a look of some sort.. , but nothing memorable. I found myself constantly pulling up the map to stay oriented and to know where to go next. I can see why the developers had to add an arrow at the top of the screen to let you know where to go next.

Water effects are unimpressive, especially the small, cascading waterfalls you see throughout the levels. They all look the same. There is also no splashing effect when you jump in the water. The effect when you stand under water is also umimpressive. Water needed to be a bigger part of the game too. sure, you are under water, but I was always dry as a bone. The scene very early in the game involving the airplane debris hitting the tunnel is a good example of an action scene where the water could have become your enemy. Instead it ends up being just another static corridor to walk through.

Enemies aren't stupid by any means like a lot of awful FPS games out there, but this is far from a classic for confrontations and excitement. Basically, you fire, they circle strafe you and fire and take cover to a certain degree, you apply First Aid kits, run around, and then finish them off. You can make them fight each other with the Enrage Plasmid, but this just isn't all that exciting either. The AI in Perfect Dark and Goldeneye on hard is still the best of all time in my book.

Enemies aren't armed with plasmids in a similar fashion to you (at least I didn't notice..). I was expecting to have to deal with the enemies in different ways to beat them. Some are resistant to certain plasmid attacks, and that is about it.

There aren't any real boss battles either (I haven't gotten to the end yet, but the consensus is that the final battle is also a disappointment). The boss battles, again if they are even boss battles, remind me of Crapdown, another mega overrated game. I didn't even realize I had killed one of the bosses at one point until I searched his dead body. Does a game need boss battles? No. But if a central character is now front and center and trying to kill me, i expect something different, not just another enemy.

Yea, searching stuff... zzzzzz Searching desks for ammo, needles, money, and crap like that gets old very fast... I am fighting a splicer and looking though desks at the same time for a candy bar power up? You also have no choice. You need this crap to get through the game.

And the lame mini game that sucks you out of the action 150 times as you play.

World of Warcraft this not. I have yet to use a single vending machine to tweak my plasmids, or to prepare for a specific battle. You end up just upgrading everything and you get stronger. No tweaking needed.

Bioshock needed another year of development. They got everyone fooled with a nice trailer (one of the best ever), and they have taken advantage of a weak 360 offering. The release date in August was perfect.
