Analyst: $399 PS3 Next April

by jonahfalcon| Published: Friday, September 07 @ 20:43:58 EDT

After wrongly predicting the PlayStation 3 would outsell the Xbox 360 in July, Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter is now predicting the almost unthinkable...

The PlayStation 3 price will drop to $399 in April. This follows other analysts’ predictions that the PS3 better have a $499 price tag during the holiday season or else.

Pachter has also changed his tune on the Xbox 360:

We expect Xbox 360 hardware and software sales to increase over prior months due to the Xbox 360 price cuts.

Three things pop into my head when listening to the “experts”:

  • Do analysts think every problem is solved by a price cut?
  • Do they pick these predictions out of a hat?
  • Do they pick these analysts out of a hat?

What do you think?

what about killzone? Think that will be a system seller. Depending how the game is I might get the ps3 for that game. Just like I did with GOW.

How about:
No.
No.
No.
Hell no.
They killed that franchise with the first sequel, IMO.
Maybe.
No.
and No.

But, hey, it's nice for Sony that they have some games coming that appeal to someone.

Sigh, come on, folks.. this is coming from Michael "My predictions always fall flat on their face" Pachter.

He announced a X360 price cut to coincide with Day 1 of E3. Did it happen? No. He predicted the PS3 would outsell the X360 in July. Did it happen? No.

The only benchmark I have to follow on this is Sony, and the problem with that is Sony is sending too many mixed signals. Out of stock! No, we're sorry, it's back now! It's a price cut! But, uh, here's a 599 model so we're back to our original 499/599, 2 SKU plan at launch! It's backwards compatible! Oh, we're dumping the hardware and going software.

The only thing Sony has remained consistent on has been their hyping of Blu-Ray on the console. Yet, meantime, they keep reducing the price of their standalone Blu-Ray player making IT more appealing as a cheap Blu-Ray playback device.

I don't expect a price cut. And if there is one, I'm willing to bet it will be Sony phasing out the 60GB's completely, dropping a basic 80GB package down to 499, and discontinuing the 80GB/Motorstorm bundle, after the holiday season.

They are going to need to do something to sell those things. (Score: 1)

This is probably not far off.

Consider: The Blu-Ray drive is what is making the PS3 so expensive, or at least one of the predominant problems. With Blu-Ray taking off, the drives are being made in greater and greater volumes, and thus they should be available cheaper and cheaper. It's only a matter of time before the price drops on the rest of the components, making manufacturing the PS3 a lot cheaper. Will it make money at $399? Probably not, but I'll bet it keeps it inline with, or slightly more expensive than, standalone Blu-Ray players.

I was planning to buy a PS3, but bought an XBOX360 because it had better games. Still, I see the writing on the wall for HD-DVD and am going to need/want a Blu-Ray player at some point. If the PS3 is a good player and not much more money, the I can see buying one. The $399 price point is likely not much more than blu-ray players will be selling for by April.

They hold your console for 3- 4 weeks then they say here have 1 month of live free, up yours you had my system for close to a month you gave me nothing but head aches. Then the process starts all over again. Come on the system has been out since 2005 fix it once and for all go to You Tube or Google broken XBOX and you will be there for days in amazement how BILL GATES and the THUGS at MICROSOFT can get away with this. I have my PS2 for SEVEN years. never a problem washing machine 12 yrs frederator. 15 yrs TV on every day all day stereo same crap-box 3-6 hours frizzled out twice up yours BILLY BOY you are the worst greed monger of the 21 1st century. just make it right the first time listen if I was driving my car and the brakes failed all of the makes and models in that lot would of been recalled no questions asked not BILLY BOY and his THUGS at MICROSOFT they just make more of the same broken down junk. Oh, look, the same, tired, argument of the X360 failure rate.

How quickly people forget the problems of the PS2. How quickly people forget that launch PS2s would, more often than not, stop reading CD based media (including blue backed PS2 disks, old PSX disks, and CD Audio disks) or would require that you have to put it on its side, or do some other silly ritual, just to get them to play. And that problem persisted for three renditions of the PS2 until they changed the drives they were using. For more than a year and a half, Sony completely failed to own up to the problem of the drives.

How about the PSP? How about the launching of UMD disks out of the supposed-to-be locked drive case mid-game? Sony took their sweet time addressing that problem, as well.

I'm sick of the arguments about the failure rates. Microsoft is doing something about them at their own expense AND they're attempting to fix the problem by adjusting the hardware. That's better than Sony who blatantly ignored reports of problems with PS2 drives and UMD drives.

But silly me, I'm trying to use logic against someone who actually thinks Bill Gates and Microsoft are "thugs". The entire preceding post reeks of typical fanboyism - looking at the world through blinders and ignoring the past. So the PS3 might be more stable in terms of hardware, but how long has Sony been doing this? Since 1995, and they had to deal with their own console problems on their second major system iteration. How long has Microsoft been in the business? Since 2000?

PS. My Whirlpool dryer lasted 3 years before needing replaced. Frigidaire window unit ac? 2 and a half years. And in case you haven't noticed, car recalls happen A LOT, but I don't see people calling Ford a bunch of thugs.
