72 Percent of the U.S. are Gamers According to NPD

by Tank| Published: Monday, April 07 @ 15:37:30 EDT

NPD, the company famous for tracking sales statistics on video games and video game consoles month after month, has released their annual study on how many Americans are gamers. The results may surprise you.

This latest study has found that a surprising 72 percent of the U.S. play video games which is up from 64 percent from their last study a year ago. Of those 72 percent, half or 36 percent of them play online games which is up only a couple percent from last year. Perhaps Reuters has an answer as to why such a difference between offline and online gaming, They found in recent study that one third of Americans aren’t online at all, see no point in the Internet and have no plans to jack into it, that’s some 31 million homes! Although the US being 2nd worst in Internet bandwidth for the price probably doesn't help this situation much either.

When it comes to online gaming, the PC is king with 90 percent of online gamers playing on a PC. Who said PC gaming was dead? 19 percent of online gamers are console gamers and 3 percent play on their cellphones which is an emerging market for gaming. Casual games played on a cellphone is the popular choice for women gamers.

To break down the 19 percent of gamers that use consoles into which consoles they are using, the Xbox 360 is king with 50 percent but Xbox 360 gamers spent the most number of hours playing games online. The other 50 percent was split between the PS3, Wii and handhelds consoles.

The Wii60 fan promotion doesn’t really seem to have caught on though. Only three percent of gamers own two of the next gen consoles and only two percent own all three next gen consoles. For the most part it looks like gamers have an allegiance to one console and that’s what they stick with.

Overall it looks like a very positive audience growth for the gaming industry and dare we say that gaming is finally a main stream activity?

I believe that most people who are considered "gamers" by this type of study, would never self identify as a gamer.

An example: my father in law is a card game PC junkie: loves solitaire. Will play a ton of games a week. Would he ever consider himself a "gamer" ? No, never.

But if he was asked about his gaming habits, I imagine this study would put him into the "gamer" slot.

well ps3 priced themselves out of the market at launch, there sales will most likely go up this yr with allot of people liking the 399 price.

if the wii can become more accessible i see those numbers going up to, i know lots of people who want one but cant find one, and they are tired of calling around to get one. i think if Nintendo doesn't soon fix this issue they may not have a demand anymore because people will be tired of trying.

72% seems like allot, i would like to see hard numbers on ages, and see what ages play the most. that would be very interesting.

Speaking of the PS3, people that buy it as an affordable blu-ray player will probably be counted as a "gamer" even if they never play it as a game system.

thats a good point, i know i bought one for the blue ray player.
but play my 360 religiously
so i see where that could be skewed

why would you assume that? (Score: 1)

why would you assume that because they own a PS3: the study would consider them gamers?

One would imagine the questions would be "do you own a console?" "What do you use the console for? Check all that apply" If they don't check gaming: then they aren't gamers.

Point is: here at 2o2p: when we hear "gaming" we think console (and typically, although not always) FPS type games.

However, most of the games that are played are small, casual games on the PC.

Neat-o number... "19 percent of online gamers are console gamers"

Wonder what the numbers are like in Korea or Japan, are the ratios the same? I'd wager more Online PC gamers in Korea (Thanks Starcraft) and more online console gamers in Japan. Actually considering how much Japan loathes the 360 it might be more in line with US ratios, unless the ps3 is really doing well over there, and I guess with Monster Hunter still running on PS2 there's always the possibility that the little console that could is still holding it's own overseas.

Yeah, Internet in the US sucks, when I hear about the connection/cost overseas I get quite green. My little 6mbps connection pales to the 30+mbps you can get in some Asian areas.

Great Britain may have slightly better throughput, but I hear Brits complaining all the time about usage caps and being throttled back to sub-modem speeds, so it's not all rosy overseas.
