120GB HDD For Xbox 360 - Size Matters!

by CodeMonkey| Published: Monday, March 26 @ 11:15:18 EDT
Apparently GameStop has an upcoming promotional poster for the Microsoft 120GB Hard Disk for the Xbox 360.

The image, captured on a blackberry and shot over to Xbox360fanboy captures the accessory in all its glory...

Okay, the image is fairly small but blackberries don't compare to a high resolution Digital SLR camera - so we'll take what we can get. This doesn't confirm any Xbox 360 Elite or HDD Transfer Cable but it does make a few of us feel better about our disk capacity issues.

Renting movies and downloading TV shows via Xbox Live Marketplace is a tough pill to swallow with such a small disk. A 120GB disk would definitely solve many of our issues. How long will it be before this comes "standard" in the Premium box? Perhaps this is what the rumored "Elite" Xbox 360 will solve?

I'd like one, and i wonder what they 20gig will fetch on a trade-in. which brings the next question to mind. Will there be any security issues if say we wanted to trade them in? For example, what about all my info, cc#'s, etc. when we "Delete" is it actually gone? i know that you can still pull info from hdd's on pcs but not sure if there are anything to worry about.

I highly doubt Microsoft stores any sensitive material on the disk. The only thing you may have there is a gamertag, but you'll most likely opt to "recover" that on the new disk. The profile is small compared to a saved game.

More than likely, if you return it to a store they'll wipe it anyway (all the ones I get in I wipe) and restore them to factory settings.

Gamestop had a little problem with porn on a PSP memory stick that was traded in and ended up in the wrong hands. Now they are required to send all memory and harddrives to another location where they are wiped.

The drive is going to be 179.99 which i think is a good value relative to the $99 for the 20 GB version. But relative to what you can buy one at a computer store, that's outrageous !

Its cool that they are coming out with the 120GB disk, but I don't download tv and movies from the market place. Now give me some xvid or divx support and I'll be a happy camper.

This is going to be a mess. Your hard drive serial number is linked to your console serial number. This screws up aaccess to any dowload content if you switch hard drives and consoles. I found this out after my 360 broke and I got a refurb back. Huge pain in the ass getting that resolved and it never was fully resolved to my satisfaction.

I've switched my hard disk with three Xbox 360 consoles in my house and I've never had any issues at all. As a matter of fact, you'd not even know it was swapped except for all the saved content and video games.

I've also played my XBLA games without any issues.

I have had my harddrive on four different 360s. I use it on my wife's fairly often(is she is asleep I take my HD upstairs to play on her system so I don't wake her up.) and I am on my 3rd 360 at the moment. The only problem I know of is moving or copying some saves to another HD, some saves will not transfer.

Let's face it, they didn't invent any new hard disks :) And, I'm betting it's not even a 10,000 RPM disk, right?

All you're paying for is the connector that makes it work with the 360. That's an expensive little adapter, huh? :)

But its proprietary right? Otherwise someone could make a generic drive bay and you could put in a 500gig drive from best buy...

As it is, if I ever get to feeling my 20 gig is too full, I think Ill try getting the pc adapter so I can swap out my saved info onto my pc drive.

Micosoft still has this way over priced and in all reality, it's only value is for short term TV show storage due to DRM. Without DRM at only 120GB you wouldn't be able to store more than a handfull or two of movies.

I'll hold off, buy the movies on DVD and rip them and play them via media center PC where I have virtually unlimited disk, or and for the same $179.99 I can get a 500GB drive for my pc.
