Today's Classic Snags and an Old Friend Returns

I worked at my the vintage gaming shop today and was able to add a few items that I needed to my collection.

I snagged two nice boxed games for the Sega Master System (Time Solders and Double Dragon), one fairly common game for the NES (Jackal - think Commando on Wheels) and the something I have been looking for for a while, I nice Coleco Pocket Football game. I used to own and play all the Coleco Handhelds when I was in elementary school. These games are very simple - typically you move LED dots around a play field - but somehow, back then, I could spend countless hours on these things. Now I just need to get the basketball and baseball "Head no Head" versions to go with it.

Yesterday, I traded my NEO GEO Conversin Cab to get my Sega Genesis Dedicated cab back from the guy who owns the comics book shop where I work with classic video games. You may remember that I sold him this cab to raise funds for my Robotron cab, something I don't regret, but which always hurt a little. Well this baby is now back where she belongs (in my basement arcade) and isn't leaving again any time soon. This cab runs off of a Series II Sega Genesis console and plays any Genesis Cart. The sides are done up very nicely with Gargoyles artwork. I still have not found much information on this game or how many were produced by Beuna Vista Games. Either way, I love this cab. Now I just have to find a nice NEO GEO "Big Red" dedicated cab to replace the one that I traded.

Midlothian Update from Halo Waypoint

From the Desk of Jeff Goff, Community Manager over at 343 Industries.

Showdown in the Heart of Midlothian (screen-grab from "Midnight in the Heart of Midlothian" – Part 4, written by Frank O'Connor, art and animation by ONE).

Hello everyone,

I hope you’ve all had a great week. Today I’ve got some info (and an image) from the conclusion to “Midnight in the Heart of Midlothian.” As I’ve stated previously, I plan on making these messages evolving over the course of the next few weeks/months to include additional info and special first-looks, so stay tuned for that. For now, enjoy…

"Midnight in the Heart of Midlothian" – Part 4

Written by Frank O'Connor

Animated by ONE

On Saturday, February 6th, the final episode of the "Midnight in the Heart of Midlothian" motion comic will be available for viewing exclusively on Halo Waypoint.

Pumped full of meds and nearing death, Baird, the grizzled ODST, and sole human survivor aboard the UNSC Destroyer, Heart of Midlothian, makes a final, desperate stand against the Covenant forces that have taken command of the ship. The location of Earth, and likely the fate of humanity, hangs in the balance as the story comes to a stunning conclusion.

343 Industries has partnered with ONE to create a stunning motion comic based on Frank O’Connor’s Halo: Evolutions short story. Told in ONE's unique artistic style, "Midnight in the Heart of Midlothian" is a story of bravery and sacrifice in the darkest parts of space. "Midnight in the Heart of Midlothian" will air weekly as a four-part series exclusive to Halo Waypoint, with a new episode premiere each Saturday through February 6th. After the final episode, the Midlothian series will remain available on Waypoint indefinitely so fans can come back to watch this amazing story again and again.

"Midnight in the Heart of Midlothian" Episode Premiere Schedule

I hope everyone is enjoying “Midlothian,” and if you have any questions about this mail or "Midnight in the Heart of Midlothian," please let me know. Also, if you are interested in setting up an interview with Frank or one of the producers on the project, please send me a message and we can see about setting something up.

·         NEXT WEEK on Waypoint

Next Saturday (2/13) we will add the fully compiled version of “Midnight in the Heart of Midlothian” to Waypoint, featuring each of the four episodes edited together and presented as one cohesive viewing experience.

Additionally, we will have a teaser for our next series of Saturday premium content. Unfortunately, I can’t give any specifics just yet, but I think it will be well received and I will make sure to drop everyone a hint (or more) as soon as I can.

Today, I found one of my Grails

So today, with the help of my two friends, VideoDan and Joey, I was able to snag one of my personal Holy Grails when it comes to coin-op arcade video cabs, Donkey Kong. This machine went on sale in the town next to mine on Friday via CL. I was lucky enough to get the first email into the seller and went by on Friday to check it out and put a downpayment on the machine. Today, we picked it up and brought it back home.

As you can see, the game is in really good shape. The white T-molding really needs to be replaced, but otherwise, the game is in excellent condition and plays great.

My friends Joey and VideoDan, who helped me lug this cab into my basement then drank a few brews and played a few games of DK to celebrate.

The Basement Arcade is really starting to shape up. Now to work on filling out the wall to the left.

Halo Waypoint Update

Just recieved an update from Jon Goff, Community Manager over at 343 Industries, the group behind all Halo Waypoint Content available on XBox Live. Below is information on the next episode of Midnight in the Heart of Midlothian and the upcoming Halo 3 Griftball Double XP Weekend - Enjoy.

Grifball Double XP and Waypoint

This weekend, Bungie’s Double XP playlist is dedicated to Grifball. To help celebrate, and have a little fun, members of the Halo Waypoint team will be jumping into the Double XP playlist from 1PM-5PM (PST) this Sunday (January 31) to take our chances against the Halo community. We will then splice together footage of the matches we participate in to create a special Waypoint video dedicated to the sport of Grifball and the random smattering of crazy action, violence, joy and devastation inherent in any given Grifball match.

We view this as an opportunity to have a little fun with our fellow Halo fans and recognize the wide range of players who continue to make Halo a hallmark of the Xbox 360 and Xbox LIVE. This is also a great opportunity to help promote Bungie’s ongoing efforts toward providing the community with a variety of interesting game types and playlists, which helps to keep the multiplayer community vibrant and engaged.

The Waypoint Grifball squad will be lead by the appropriately named HaloWaypoint gamertag, so it will be readily apparent when teams are matched up against the fearsome might of our mediocre yet passable Grifball skills.

Over the course of the next few days we will be letting those who follow us on Facebook, Twitter and elsewhere around the interwebs know the specifics outlined here, in addition to live-Tweeting during our Sunday afternoon ass-kicking (err… I mean, glorious and frequent victories).

It should be fun, bludgeoning friend(accidentally, of course) and foe with a Gravity Hammer usually is. If you’re down with fun (and I think you are), feel free to hope online and join in.

Here’s a quick breakdown of the specifics…

WHAT: Grifball Double XP Weekend (Jan. 28 – Jan. 31)

WHEN: All weekend, but 1PM-5PM (PST) on Sunday, Jan. 31st specifically

WHERE: Halo 3 Matchmaking “DOUBLEXPWEEKEND” Playlist (Grifball) on Xbox LIVE

WHO: A Halo Waypoint team (led by gamertag: HaloWaypoint) vs. the world

HOW: Just log-in and play the Grifball playlist. It’s that simple. And while the teams we play against will be purely by random chance, there is no doubt the overall experience will be a good one whether you happen upon us or not.

WHY: This is all in the name of good clean Hammer-smashing, Sword-swiping fun. Besides, we love Halo and we love Grifball, and love is the only excuse we need to crush some skulls and cut some fools. Following the mayhem the Waypoint team will compile the best of the footage featuring both our team, and the community members who take us on, into a highlight reel to be showcased on Halo Waypoint.

·; "Midnight in the Heart of Midlothian" – Part 3

Baird faces-off against the Covenant intruders (screen-grab from "Midnight in the Heart of Midlothian" – Part 3, written by Frank O'Connor, art and animation by ONE).

Written by Frank O'Connor - Animated by ONE

Beginning this Saturday, January 30, the third episode of "Midnight in the Heart of Midlothian" will be available for viewing exclusively on Halo Waypoint. The story picks up immediately following the events of episode two as Baird, our worse-for-the-wear, but tough-as-nails ODST comes into contact with the Covenant contingent that has boarded The Heart of Midlothian and slaughter its crew. The action ramps up as Baird, with the aid of the ships AI, Mo Ye, sets about his efforts to stop the Covenant from acquiring Earth’s location, building to a cliffhanger that leads directly into next week’s finale.

Episode 2 – AVAILABLE NOW on Waypoint

Episode 3 - January 30th
