Podtacular!

Hey there, Halo fans again.  The Pwnathon crew has yet another treat for you.  Jonny12gauge was a guest on the most recent Podtacular podcast.  Jonny had the chance to talk about 2old2play.com, the Pwnathon event and got to participate in a few other things.  Even if you're not a Halo fan, check out the first few minutes at least.  Sounds like Jonny had a great time!

Podtacular is a weekly podcast hosted by Foo Mo Jive and JVB that focuses on the Halo video game series developed by Bungie Studios. Its name is derived from the word podcast, and the famous Halo 2 in-game player award, “Killtacular”.  With the first episode published in June of 2005, Podtacular has since gone on to reach over 2000 listeners and be featured on Bungie.net, as well as win the 2006 Gaming Podcast of the Year Award from PodcastAwards.com.

Check it out!

Another Worthy Cause

When the Pwnathon crew started up this year, there were a number of worthy causes that were considered.  It was a tough decision.  We plan to recognize all the organizations considered, but with the coming Memorial Day I thought that now is a good time to put the spotlight on one in particular.  The Pwnathon in July will be 100% focused on Child's Play, but for now, take a minute to check out this other worthy cause: The Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund

Call of PWN

There's been a little confusion on a few Pwnathon matters I'd like to clear up.  First of all, the Pwnathon will be from July 1-31.  We'll have a full Month of Pwn.  Some of our activities will span the entire month.  Some will be spread out through that timeframe.  The 2o2p LAN will also be raising funds for Child's Play, but is being managed by a different group.  We're all one happy family, we're just working a bit separately.  Finally, WTF is the Pwnathon?  Scroll down to see my last blog on the 2008 Pwnathon.  The Pwnathon will just be a series of events that are geared towards having fun and raising donations for Child's Play.  It's a celebration of 2old2play and the type of people that meet here.  We intend to include everyone and we invite anyone to plan an event.

We're still looking to see some more involvement.  Sports fans?  We also have need for people that have special skills outside of just loving a particular game.  I have a strong need in the marketing department.  If you have writing skills or would like to be involved in contacting companies for involvement and swag, send me a PM.

Along the lines of involvement.... So, uhm, I thought that COD had a pretty big following here on 2o2p?  I've seen the heated COD vs Halo threads.  I've seen bragging on both sides after Major Nelson's usage reports come out.  I have to say, as far as the Pwnathon goes, Halo is looking like it will be completely pwning COD.  For that matter, Gears2, Forza and some other games will be way more active than COD in this year's Pwnathon.

To be fair, the Pwnathon started as a primarily Halo event in 2008.  Halo has a pretty big head start.  Also, the 2old2shoot clan is stepping up and may be planning an event or two for COD.  I've had a little interest outside of that too.  Still, the Pwnathon's Halo Director, Jonny12gauge (2old2playHalo clan OL) is attacking his task with a vengeance.  He has contacted various other communities and contacts.  He's cooking up some sweet events.  Also, we have a Halo themed advertisement (scroll down a couple posts), and the Halo game developer (Bungie) has featured our event on their front page twice.

I'm not saying Halo community is better than the COD community here.  I just don't want the COD crowd to think they've been stiffed come this July.  Just consider this a notice that we're looking for more.  SPwngeBob is not happy.

thanks again, Bonecollektor

The History of PWN: Part 3

In part 1 of this series I told you about how the 2old2playHalo clan came up with the idea for the Pwnathon.  In part 2 I took you through the clan’s planning process up to the start of the first Pwnathon in 2008.  Now, I want to talk about the actual events last year which will hopefully better show you what to expect this year.

The first thing we did was kick off the event with a big introduction.  Challenges were big part of the first fundraiser we did inside the clan (see part 1) so we planned to focus the Pwnathon on them as well.  The challenges were definitely a hit, but to be honest they didn't go over as well as we expected.  We had envisioned members challenging their clanmates and other clans to all sorts of crazy stuns and having donations roll in from them.  We did get some participation, and we'll definitely do it again, but our Pwnathon's success was actually found elsewhere.

The second part of 2old2playHalo's first fundraiser was services.  Members bought custom sigs and avatars for a small donation.  It wasn't a huge donation maker but it worked.  We tried a Pwnathon Service thread, but it looked like it was going to completely flop at first.  That is, until two 2old2play members stepped up and made some big offers.  Caesar offered a custom sig up for auction.  The Pwnathon's biggest success came from Dahji though.  He offered up a custom keychain for groups to bid on.  In the end, the two top bidders both got keychains from Dahji and the Pwnathon exploded over the goal amount.

We had a multitude of other events going on at the same time.  There was the Ladies Night, some open gaming room nights, the PMS clan joined in one night, and a Halo Forge Contest.  Really, the best explanation of last year's Pwnathon can be found in the Finale and Awards announcement.   In case you can't tell from the various links, we were making it up as we went along.  That is really the beauty of the Pwnathon though.  It's just a bunch of gamers doing what gamers do.  The only difference for this event was that we were doing it for a cause.  The $1500+ that we raised may seem like a relatively small amount but remember how it started.  We couldn't find anywhere that an online fundraiser like this had ever been before.  For the first shot, it was a huge success.

This year, we are taking what we learned last year and going even bigger.  Last year we focused on Halo.  This year, the 2old2playHalo and the Halo game will play a big part in the event but it is now the 2old2play.com Pwnathon.  The planning crew has their own forum and is comprised of members that have stepped up to the challenge from all over the site.  We are including most of the major titles played by 2o2p'ers.  Also, remember this year we're raising funds for Child's Play.  The 2old2play LAN crew is also planning to include Child's Play as their benefactor so it truly is a site-wide goal to help out this worthy cause.

Get ready folks.  July 2009.  get pwned.

I Pwny the Fool!

First of all, if you haven't seen IamDank's video, for Pwn's sake scroll down. It's right there in my last blog. Do it now. It's genius.

I'm working on another video project that will require a lot of clips. I'm looking for gameplay or game trailer footage for any game that is currently being played. Halo, COD, Gears, Forza, Street Fighter, Guitar Hero, Rock Band, WOW, whatever. If you have a downloadable clip of some of your gameplay please post a link or send me something. If you want to help out and send me a link to a sweet downloadable trailer, that would be awesome also. That will save me a ton of google time.

In other news, we have assembled quite a crew. There are still some groups that I'd like to see step up (holler back, sports game fans!) but I'm pretty stoked about the diversity we have already. Some members have messaged me just to say that they will be supporting the Pwnathon in July. That's great to hear, thanks. Some of you may have seen Pwnathon sigs or threads in your clan forum from what am calling the Pwn Army. They are members that are helping spread the word. Getting posts in clan forums is huge since we all know that some members really don't get out much. Thanks so much, 2o2p. This year's event will be what you make it. So far it's looking Pwntacular.

And now, a submission from Pwn Army volunteer Bonecollektor. He made a bunch of these but I'm holding back. You only get one for now:

GET PWN'D FOOL!
