Which version to buy?

Like many others I play on several types of gaming platforms. With gaming developers releasing titles on all the major platforms it's up to the console developers to differentiate the differences in the game play on their console. The game developers themselves seem to have no interest in releasing this information. Console developers are also releasing titles meant to show off the power of the game platforms that are exclusive to one console. These major titles seem to be the only place we are consumers can find the differences. However, I believe the console developers still need to work on showing "what is gained" by purchasing a gaming title produced by a third party on their platform verses another one. Take EA's Army of Two or Ubisoft's GRAW2, what is different about the game play in the PS3 version verses the XBox 360 version? Is there any difference? I'm sure there are differences, but the game developers are holding this information very close to the vest for fear that the platform developer. As an outsider looking in, the gaming industry appears to be full of side deals being cut all the time to one up a competitor. While I'm not questioning this practice we as consumers need to demand more information on what the difference in the games are. Otherwise if a game title is released on one platform before the others will lead to a game being a bigger hit in most cases on one console verses another.

Playstation 3 thoughts

Here is an article I wrote discussing my thoughts on the PS3 http://gap.us.playstation.com/?q=node/52514 Since not everybody can access this site beow is the text of the article. This is not a review of the PS3 rather my thoughts on it verses the XBox 360. I have both the PS3 and 360 both are the high end models offered. I'm also not trying to pump up the PS3 just look at them apples to apples. I should also state I do not work for either company or in the gaming industry. If you consider that the PS3 60gb version has built-in wireless and Blue Ray and on the 360 these are options that you can add if you want/need them. Microsoft made the right choice to allow people to add these items if they are wanted. But for our discussion we will look at the price for an XBox 360 with the wireless adaptor and the HD-DVD drive along with the XBox console. The prices are even but again you just have only 2 choices on the PS3. Now consider Sony built the power supply into the unit and that the PS3 hard drive can be upgraded with a off the shelf drive. Additionally, the PS3 includes readers for standard memory cards. From an design stand point you would have to give the PS3 higher marks than the 360. Now this part can go on forever but it's safe to say Sony's Playstation Networks is sub par and that's being nice. Like many of you, I have been reading for the past two years about all the great things the PS3 would do, when it comes to the Playstation Network. While I know Microsoft has been at this several years longer than Sony but come on Sony. Sony has had the past 2 years to develop a first rate solution. There is a fair amount of talk about the update for the PS3 coming in March '07. I am really looking forward to this update for simple things like multi-tasking support, which I have no idea why it was not included out of the box, besides Sony being rushed to get these on the market. Which makes you wonder how many engineers Sony has and what they are doing. Because the hardware delays on the PS3 should not have put the software engineers assigned to the PSN behind at all., other than testing on finished hardware. The simple truth is XBox Live is the best by far, Nintendo and Sony can learn a lot from the ground work Microsoft has laid in this area. What made me look at both systems like this, it was a questionnaire Sony sent to me a couple of days ago. The botton line is this, until the PSN offer something more compelling than XBox Live I will buy games that come out on both systems for the 360. The online experience is that important to me, for others this has not been a big deal at all. The bottom line is Sony will continue to improve the PSN and PS3 experience over the life of the product. I for one hope that they address the PSN sooner rather than later.

Welcome

Welcome to my blog on 2old2play. As I get back into gaming online I am surprised there are so many like myself who are over 30 and looking to play online with people others than the typical kids or teenagers. I purchased a XBox when first released because of Halo, I also enjoy playing many other games like Ghost Recon. As you see I enjoying playing the shooter type games. After beating some of these games I grew tied of the XBox and my son told over my XBox Live account and the console. Right before Christmas 2006 I had a chance to trade some equipment I was not using for a PS3 (60gb) so I did. I have gotten back into gaming playing things like Resistance The Fall of Man online. So enjoying that I went out after Christmas and purchased my own Xbox 360 and XBox LIve account. My wife and I have really enjoyed playing the new XBox. Playing games we grew up playing like Pac Man , Dig Dug and others. So now we are a 2 XBox 360 family and at times I can see us becoming a 3 XBox 360 family. My wife will get on the Xbox and play for hours and hours. Which leaves me watch her or doing something else, not that I mind. Oh we also have a Wii but I don't really play that. There are a few things I am really looking forward to like the major firmware update to the PS3 hopefully late this week. Games like GRAW2, EA's Army of Two and we can not forget about Halo 3. In fact we have 2 copies already paid for so my son and I don't fight over who gets to play it. I do spend about half my time playing the PS3 verses the XBox. Each console has things I really like and things I would like to see improved. Knowing most people here play the XBox, I hope people have an open mind and other PS3 owners come join. I believe there is room for them both in the gaming world. Sony as added me as a GAP member on there playstation underground so I do write articles that are posted there. I will try and make sure I post links to these articles as well. Welcome again to my blog here and please by all means add me as a friend and let's play some games! Corey
