It's not a cat

I'm beggining to think we got a cat  instead of a dog.  The little one sleeps on his back, lies on top of the pillows on the couch looking out the window, and meows.  Oh well, at least he doesn't make me sneeze.  These two are quite the pair, sleeping all day and night to jump on us at 5:30 am and run around wrestling with each other.  What's it like to sleep in again?

At least Duke is doing fine after his neutering.  It was hard keeping him still for a week.  We had to wrap him up in t-shirts to keep Toby from licking his stitches.  It still didn't keep him from playing.  We got home one day to find teeth marks all over Duke's plastic cone from Toby.  I swear they worked together to try and break him out of it.  They also have a habit of picking through the laundry.  Duke will grab a bunch of clothes and put it on the bed and Toby will lay in the middle of it.

It' looks like a very hard life.  I wonder how they are going to take it when I start painting this room and they don't get access to the bed.

Toby & Duke

Well it looks like I got roped in to extending the family.  The application we had put into a rescue had gotten approved after we adopted Duke, and the rescue organization had liked us so much they wanted to forgo the home visit before the adoption.  Since having Duke we've found he gets really, really excited when he sees another dog.  He's not too bright and thinks that every dog he sees should love him from the start.  But when another dog gets aggressive with him he tends to ignore them and wander off.

Taking him to an offleash park in the past few weeks, we've found him to be most happy when he is running free with the other dogs, having them chase him around and jump all over him.  So when we saw the description for Toby, with his mild temperment and quiet nature, we thought'd he'd be a good match for Duke.  Aside from a bit of nervous growling trying to assert himself, he's taken to Duke pretty quickly, going wherever he goes.

The little guy is only 10 months old and they think he might be a pomeranian/corgi mix, though he looks a little different.  He was found in a box on the side of the road in Ohio with a brother.  The rescue group took him from a high-kill pound and transported him here to Mississauga to a foster home, just a few minutes away.  This picture is when he got a little scared in the car as we were driving through construction.  He had to get up from his spot and go sit by Duke to feel safe.  Having him around makes Duke a lot more excited.  They are a great pair, hardly making any noise except a short bark from Toby when playing, and always wandering around together and sharing toys.

Luckily Toby's already fixed and vetted, as we found Duke would have been quite costly if we didn't have a vet in the family ($950 for a neuter and ciste removal, that is going to only cost us $300 from the girlfriend's step-mother.)

The bed was made until these two got in there.

Duke

Not much of a blogger myself because my life is pretty boring.  I've little interest in hearing about my work and I don't think others want to hear it either.  But I decided to include this one anyway.  With the death of my xbox for a short time, we decided in our boredom to start looking at getting a dog.  We are moving into a condo in June, and need something that can handle being in an apartment.  We had originally thought about getting a puppy and had put in an application on one, but while we were waiting, we stumbled across pictures of a little Beagle/Basset hound in a pound in Aurora, about an hour north of Toronto.  He was a stray that had been found wandering the area with a female companion.

Having last Friday off of work to meet the mortgage manager at the bank, we rushed out of the bank to drive up there to meet him.  Out of every dog in the kennel, he was the only one who didn't go crazy and start barking when we came in the door.  He calmly stood up and strolled to the front of his cage when we came to him.  This is him about an hour after walking through the door of our apartment:

He's pretty much taken the place over like he's been there for years.  Aside from two minor incidents of him marking territory, he's been extremely calm.  He's not neutered yet, but will be soon.  He won't bark either, unless we run across a rabbit or raccoon while walking.  Then he'll go crazy to chase them.  He absolutely loves his bath and being brushed, he could spend the whole day lying down while being scratched.  But he has no interest in toys or chewing.  He won't even bother with a rawhide.

It's heartbreaking to think that someone could've mistreated this little guy.  Makes you wonder how these people are allowed to have animals.
