Lombardi Gras

Saints celebrate Lombardi Gras with parade through New Orleans

Only a Super Bowl victory parade could upstage Mardi Gras in New Orleans.

Carnival floats carrying Saints players, coaches and team owner Tom Benson rolled past tens of thousands of jubilant fans in downtown New Orleans on Tuesday, two days after the 43-year-old franchise won its first NFL championship.

Players tossed beads into the crowd and signed autographs for throngs of screaming fans. Benson shouted “Who Dat!” into a microphone from his perch atop a float. Coach Sean Payton blew kisses and held the Lombardi Trophy over his head.

“Here’s to the best Mardi Gras week in the history of this city,” Payton said, raising a glass of champagne during a toast outside the city’s historic Gallier Hall.

The parade, a week before the city’s signature Fat Tuesday celebration, started outside their home turf at the Louisiana Superdome. Black, gold and white confetti floated over the crowd and a man wearing a Saints jacket held aloft a sign that read, “Happy Lombardi Gras!”

Did someone say "RePEAT"

Here's a scary thought for the rest of the NFL:

What if the New Orleans Saints aren't one year wonders?

What if they're-- dare I say it -- an emerging dynasty?

It might sound crazy. After all, the Saints had to wait 43 years to win their first world title. But laugh not. The Saints are poised for a lengthy run of contention. It has been the plan of Coach Sean Payton all along to build a perennial contender such as New England, Pittsburgh, Indiananpolis or Philadelphia. In year 4 of his tenure, he has accomplished his goal of winning the Super Bowl. He was even bold enough to mention Super Bowl XLV during his postgame speech to the team Sunday night after the Saints 31-17 victory against the Indianapolis Colts.

"Its not enough," Payton said. "Last night was great, and yet there's something that burns in you to separate yourself more. We'll spend a little bit of time to recharge the batteries and getting ourselves prepared for the challenge ahead. Our players will be ready for the challenge. We're young. We're hungry." They're also talented and experienced.
The Saints' roster is stacked with players in the primes of their careers, starting with quarterback Drew Brees. Nearly every one of their core players is under contract for next season. The only starters scheduled to become unrestricted free agents are safety Darren Sharper and linebacker Scott Fujita. The other unrestricted players -- Mark Brunell, Billy Miller, Darnell Dinkins, Dan Campbell, Nick Leckey, Kendrick Clancy and Pierson Prioleau are reserves. The rest of the roster is restricted free agents, meaning the Saints wil have the right of first refusal on all contract offers from opposing teams.

All of the receivers and backs from the league's top ranked offense are expected to be back next season. The lone exception (and I'm praying they work this out) is running back Reggie Bush, whose hefty contract might force the Saints into a difficult decision. The offensive line, which features three Pro Bowl players and an emerging player in Carl Nicks also could welcome back two time Pro Bowl left tackle Jammal Brown.

The defense returns largely intact, as well. The Saints might have to replace Sharper, Fujita or both, but they have both said their preference is to return to the New Orleans if the franchise will have them.

Almost Super Bowl Time.....

If the Saints can win just one more game this team will have accomplished what 43 seasons of Saints football couldn't and thats represented the city of New Orleans in its first ever Super Bowl game.  I've watched this team for 2 plus decades and not in my wildest dreams could I have imagined such a fine tuned, consistent, juggernaut of a team we have this year.  With most of the team still intact with the exception of Saints WR - Robert Meachem and I think Shockey may also be alittle banged up, we are a fully loaded team again.  And that will not be good news for the Vikings.......      Who Dat!!!!!!!
