Good News For 360 Owners With Marketplace Content
I've got some good news for those of you who's Xbox 360s have bricked. Until now, Microsoft has officially said that you were SOL (that's a paraphrase) WRT any LIVE Marketplace content that you wanted to play while offline. Microsoft's Xbox support page now has instructions on how to transfer the "original purchasing console" status from your bricked console to the refurbished console that they replaced it with as part of warranty service. This only works if you sent your console in for repairs and got one back from them. You can't transfer the license otherwise.
About a year ago, my brother was told that this would never, ever, EVER happen by the "4-MY-XBOX" people. I'm thrilled that they went ahead with it anyway, I'm sure in no small part due to the persistence of people like my brother who called to complain even when they were treated poorly at the time.
I still feel a bit trepidatious about the whole thing, though. It just seems too good to be true. My brother's console Red Ringed out a couple of months ago, so now he has a refurb unit from Microsoft. I'll let you know how the license transfer works out for him as soon an I can. If all goes as described, kudos to Microsoft for loosening their draconian DRM.
