Phonic Alphabet

Just to break tradition I am going to post twice in the same year now (I can't even say twice in the same month 'cause I think my last post was in August ).

Just read Soup Nazzi's blog and #14 is a problem I have faced many times before. So now ladies and gentleman, although I myself have never been in the military, I am going to attempt the Phonic Alphabet just to see how many I can get without cheating and looking up any of it online. Y'all can tell me how close I came if your bored or something.

A - Alpha

B - Bravo

C - Charlie

D - Delta

E - Echo Or is it Easy - or have I been watching to much Band of Brothers?)

F - Foxtrot

G - Golf

H - Hotel

I - Igloo? {No, no, I know that's not right. Hey at least I made it to I without forgetting (I think))

J - Jaguar {I know thats not right but it sounds good)

K - Kilo

L - Lima (or is it Lama?)

M - Mike

N - Negro {I am not racist, it is Spanish for black, OK?)

O -Oscar

P - Papa

Q - Quigley (as in down under?)

R - Ralph

S - Stoned (New NIV translation: Pelted with rocks)

T - Tango

U - Uncle (No really, I give up)

V - Victor

W - Water

X - Xray

Y - Y'all

Z - Zebra

Hmmm....I think I failed,. On the upside, my cursive is beautiful.

Fun day

Yesterday was awful. While my husband was running errands, our vehicle breaks down about 25 miles from home in the Middle of Nowhere, Podunk IA. I tried getting a hold of my mom cause she has two vehicles and we could have drove the spare one out there and picked him up right away. But she was gone for about two hours. So we ended up calling his mom, who just got off work and isn't in the greatest of moods. She decides she has to pick me up because she doesn't know where this place is at. I should tell you her driving scares the living daylights out of me. So I get directions from my husband over a less than great cell phone connection (I should tell you he gives directions only slightly better than his mom drives).  About five minutes after she picks me up the rain turns into an all out, can barely see out the windshield, hope the high winds do not pick up your car and drop it in Kansas, thunderstorm. All total it took us about four phonecalls and two turnarounds to find our way. To top it off, a few miles from our destination when lightning strikes about a mile ahead and hits a transformer. We were startled but I bet the poor guy who was picking up his mail right next to where it struck peed his pants.

Labor Day Festivities

Last night my Mother-In-Law threw a Labor Day party. There was tons of food and it was a lot of fun. She invited all her neighbors so there wouldn’t be anyone to complain about the ultra loud Karaoke out of the garage. It worked for the most part. A guy named Leo came by about 10:15 that lived across the across the alley and down a couple of houses came by and asked if we could turn it off (or way down) by 11:00 cause that is when he had to get to bed to get up early and go to work. He brought some Crown Royal to share and stayed for a while (he was still there when we left about 10:40) just to show there were no hard feelings and I thought that was a really decent gesture. I will have to remember that move for when I am the person on the other side of the coin next time.

So I sang Karaoke in public for the first time in my life. It took about four beers but I had been encouraging the kids to get up there and sing and so I figured it would be hypocritical not to try myself. It will probably never happen again, LOL. I was especially happy to see  my daughter sing. She has a pretty voice and good pitch but up till last night I couldn’t get to sing outside her room because her brothers used to tease her mercilessly when she was younger. My niece who is three years older was gracious enough to get up there with her the first time. The same niece who unbeknownst to me, video taped my performance. I told her if that video even wound up on You Tube I would hang her by her toes and pluck out every hair on her body, individually, with only a pair of tweezers.

Of course the oldest boy who is 15 and who’s cardinal rule in life is to do nothing that may be interpreted by anyone to look uncool at any time, did not get up and sing, but the 13 year old ham did (as well as showing us some fancy footwork or the ‘dance floor’). Our big surprise of the night was my 10 year old who choose Great Balls of Fire for his second song of the night. I had told him the key was to really belt out “Great Balls of Fire” instead of just singing it in a normal tone and he took my advice well. Privately, I didn’t think he would be able to pull it off especially since I knew he probably hadn’t heard it more than a handful of times, but he did a really good job. It was both cute and funny when he stumbled over the third verse ("You kissed me baba, woo.....it feels good. Hold me baby, learn to let me love you like a lover should") with pre-adolescent embarrassment. The icing on the cake was seeing Grandpa’s face light up when he heard him. Teddybear’s dad hasn’t been in good health for quite a long time and it always warms my heart to see him happy.

Some black friends of my in-laws sat in back, probably making fun of us for all our redneck ways (I guarantee, you won’t find any greater rednecks than my in-laws outside of backwoods West Virginia; it was all country and old time Rock. Please save me from ever having to hear Coal Miner’s Daughter again) but a guy named Charlie got up and sang ‘My Girl’ real sweet. I told my son that it would be a good one for him to learn for his future Karaoke career. Since last night he has been asking when the next time he could sing again and what songs could he sing and can he look up lyrics on-line? How about talent night at the school kid? Anyway a fun time was had by all although I have been told I MUST learn the electric slide (Lord Have Mercy) before the next one.

CapnHun's Day Off

Well, yesterday was a 'snow day' for us and made for a fairly interesting day off. I should start by saying my prayers for all those whose effected by the tornadoes Tuesday. Seeing such devastation on those communities made our snow troubles seem trivial by comparison. I hope all our 2old2play members dodged that bullet.

Tuesday after work Teddy announced that the doctor had scheduled his 'shock treatment' for Wednesday morning and he needed to be at the hospital at 7:30. For those of you who didn't know, teddy was diagnosed with Congestive Heart Failure back in October; he was hospitalized for about a week and we almost lost him. A pretty tough blow to the family considering he is only 40. Anyway the 'shock treatment' was a follow up procedure to get his heart back in rhythm, apparently he was still having some atrial fibrillation even after medications. We had to wait quite a while though because doc was waiting for some of the medications he had prescribed to level off in his blood stream and we had to play around with dosages etc. some to get the right balance.

I was supposed to work Tuesday, and he had arranged for his mom to be with him at the hospital. I wasn't happy with that because I wanted really wanted to be with him. I knew this wasn't a 'big deal' procedure but still. Anyway, I had to work, so despite waking up seriously early in the morning, I tried to push it out of my mind and get on with the day. The snow had started falling about midnight so we had a few inches on the ground. The weather people were predicting more, but they tend to exaggerate things (especially the morning crews) around here so I never get too excited. 5:20 the announcement comes in that school is cancelled (I was going to let them stay home anyway 'cause I get real nervous about car accidents and such around the kids schools. Plus I didn't need the coordination hassle). 6:00 it starts snowing fast and furious and I get ready for work so I can drop teddy at the hospital early and attempt to make it. 7:20 we are in the out-patient room getting set up when the kids call and say that my boss was not having us come in today, WOOHOO!!! Now we didn't have to get grandma out driving in the snow (a good thing for all the citizens of our fair city).

So I got to watch Teddy go off to sleepy-land and the doctor use the paddles on him. He even explained to me why he put one of the paddles on his back and the other on the right side of his chest  instead of on either side of the chest like you see on TV because all the electrical current goes between the paddles and the other way the only thing that was going to get the benefit from the electrical charge were his chest hairs. I didn't ask him that, he just volunteered the information but the nerd in me loves that stuff! This heart doctor is near legendary around here so I felt very privileged. Anyhow we got the bear back home as soon as he was awake enough to get dressed and climb in the van. The rest of the day was pretty much spent shoveling like everyone else around here. In the evening, I went out to help my youngest with a snow fort and man am I sore today.

Oh I was watching Discovery Channel at the hospital and they were having that show done by stunt man where they try and blow stuff up to dispel urban legends (Myth Busters?). We don't have Discovery at home and they were doing the episode where they are trying to figure out whether the 'crash landing' position is actually more dangerous because it puts the load on your neck making it snap making your death quicker (less suffering for you and less rehabilitation payments for them!). I didn't get to see the end result of those tests, did anyone here? It looked like they were having fun with the experiment although they didn't succeed in convincing  me that a dead drop fall of falling 45 ft from a crane would have anywhere near the same effect as a plane falling out of the air.
