Near Perfection

I think Call of Duty 4 might offer everything I want in an online FPS. The action is fast, the weapons deadly, and the options seem limitless. Since I've started playing, I've encountered no lag, a crisp frame rate, and few, if any, total pricks. Granted, I've only logged 45 minutes, but it's my hope that these variables will remain constant. The game is a nice contrast to the multiplayer in the Halo series, which has always felt a bit slow to me. Maybe it's because COD4 has its roots in the PC domain, and they are used to catering to the twitchy, mouse and keyboard wielding seizure candidates that inhabit that dark place. Halo also tends to be bedazzled with Timmies. I appreciate Halo, but its never been at the top of my list of go-to games, so maybe I'm a bit biased. I'm enamored with the Battlefield series, and I can remember that some of my favorite moments in Battlefield 2: Modern Combat involved crawling through tall grass for several minutes just to get one good kill with the sniper kit. I guess I'm just prejudiced. Feel free to report me.

Speaking of Battlefield, I hope Bad Company can remove some of the bad taste left in my mouth by BF2:MC. As most would attest, the single player campaign was a bit boring and had the feel of "tacked on", as opposed to "designed specifically for". The multiplayer featured good maps and some solid gameplay, but a few elements could have been improved. First off, the EA servers were less than reliable. Lag and disconnects were a constant problem. Secondly, the whole medal structure was suspect. Most of them (for me at least) were damn hard to get. If you didn't get the medals, you couldn't advance in rank, which meant (at least during the time while I was playing it), that if you had a friend who was a higher rank than you, there were some games you couldn't play with him. Brilliant. Finally, the multiplayer matches sometimes devolved into a group of people medal hunting instead of trying to win the goddamn match. I remember one match in particular where 20 of the 24 players were snipers trying to get that sniper medal. So that match basically became a 2 vs 2 as the rest of us actually attempted to capture the control points.

Foolishly, I hope that 2142 will be released for the 360. Please feel free to dream the dream with me.

Xbox Overload

My wife, who is a paragon of human perfection, went and bought me a 360 for Christmas. I've waited two years to find a good reason to get one of those things, but my wife found one for me. Two years of enviously eyeing the 360s of others and living vicariously through their tales of online shootouts have come to an end. At first, I didn't know what to do. There are so many great games, that I might have gone overboard with my initial purchases. Besides Forza 2 and Marvel: Ultimate Alliance, which came with the console, here are the games I've purchased in the past week:

The Orange Box
Call of Duty 4
Guitar Hero 2
Guitar Hero 3

Also, one of my coworkers gave me a fantastic gift I will most likely have to repay in large quantities of beer:

Sweet.

I also bit the bullet and got one of the wireless network adapters. I live on a university campus, and I constantly had problems trying to get the school's network to recognize my old Xbox. I decided the $100 was worth avoiding the hassle. I've only had it for three days, but it works like a charm. Installation consisted of plugging it in and turning my 360 on. Find your network, enter your security key and you're done.

I'm psyched about being able to play online again. All friend requests are welcome, especially if you play any of the above, or Crimson Skies (I couldn't bring myself to get rid of it.)
