Hurricane Earl ... a bust

Well! Earl was a bust. Extent of damage ... 5 hours without power and 3 branches broken on a maple tree!

It was a Category 1 when it made landfall ... but fizzled off pretty quickly when it hit the cold waters of the Scotian Shelf.

At the peek of the storm they had 200,000+ homes without power. We were lucky to get it back so quickly.

I guess when you've lived through Hurricane Juan (2003) anything less is a walk through the park!!  It took some area up to 7 days to get power restored back then!

We played a bunch of board games and I polished off a book I had half read. Shame it takes a hurricane to foster quality family time ... Laughing

Finally got rid of a horrible mistake.....

I'm going to try and make this short....

I had two cars back in 05...my camaro Z28 which I loved and a 80 something chrysler lebaron convertible.  My camaro I never really drove as my lebaron was my everyday driver.  Well my dad was in the hospital after getting a double bypass because he got a infection in his leg.  I used to drive up and see him whenever I could.  My lebaron shit the bed.  My camaro didn't do too hot on the road as I took whatever I could out of it to make it lighter at the track and it had a 3800 stall convertor in it which was not a fan of traffic and used to get insanely hot.  I had a transmission cooler on it...the one with the fan attached and it could not stand the traffic, so I had to rely on other people to take me to see my dad.  I got sick of it so I sold my camaro and bought a 05 nissan sentra SER.  Now at the time my dad was out of it and not really talking and when I told him I sold my camaro he opened his eyes and said, "what?"  He couldn't believe it.

Now I drove that car everyday and everyday for the last five years and I hated doing it.  It was a chick car and I was embarrased to say it was mine.  So I finally traded it in Tuesday and bought a 08 silverado Z71 4x4 with 28k on it.  I was looking at new trucks and I couldn't swing the payments.  I was a little surprised they gave me 7k for my sentra...it only had 51k on it and someone hit it in the rear and it had a dent in the front fender that was really bad.  I paid 14.5 for it five years ago so I think I got a really good deal out of that.  I love driving this truck and have been doing so everyday for the last week...damn 26 gallon tank and having to fill it twice.  I got the rainguards and had my friend tint the windows yesterday for coffee and a pack of cigarettes (he does a unbelieveable job) and my fiancee bought me the tonneau cover for it.  I'll post pics up when I get a chance but it is desert brown metallic which hides a lot of crap...unlike my black car.  DO NOT EVER BUY A BLACK CAR...unless you want to pull your hair out.

Wedding gig and man gossip

Last night I played a quartet gig at a wedding (prelude music, ceremony and an hour of cocktail music) at this beautiful country club on a lake. During the ceremony, when the bride's father was about to give her away, the bride and groom had to declare "i do" first. THe groom said it, and when it came time for the bride to say it she looked like she might faint. She'd been messing with her hair and trying to get the veil away from her face for several minutes... she was at first just looking fidgety but then I see her starting to sway. Her dad tightens his grip on her, and when the preacher asked for her response she takes a deep shuddering breath, rocks back on her heels a little, and finally manages to gasp out "I do." The preacher wasn't satsified and said "are you sure?" People in the audience laughed, thinking it was a joke, but he was serious. I was wondering if she was feeling faint from nerves or from having second thoughts. However, she pulled herself together and restated her intent and things carried on like usual. Made for an interesting moment.

We go inside to the clubhouse to set up for cocktail hour, get all situated and start playing. The sun is going down by this point and the room is dimly lit. We are having an incrfeasingly hard time seeing our music, and by the last 15 minutes of the show we each had our cellphones out on the music stand, angling it to throw light onto our music. We had some pretty rough going toward the end of our set!

The bride's family was kind enough to offer to let us stay for the reception. Normally I would never do that- I've been paid to provide a service and then I leave. However, we got this gig because on of the quartet members (my stand partner from symphony) is friends with the bride's family. So I decided to stay for a bit, have some food and conversation then go. I'd had a long day already what with a morning quartet rehearsal, (a little xbox break), an afternoon symphony rehearsal, and then the wedding. I ended up staying until the bride & groom left! It was so much fun!

I don't dance at weddings, I sit back and people watch. It was good fun. I met a really nice guy so we exchanged numbers (again, a tall one- 6'4") and talked practically all night. When the bride & groom left the group of people I'd been sitting with all night said let's go over to this other guy's house, so we caravaned over to Tony's (I don't know who Tony is but everyone did so I figured it's fine) and sat out by the pool til about 2:30. I haven't had this much fun in awhile! It was with an entire group of strangers, except Sunny, my stand partner, and her fiancee (whom I barely know but it counts). I can't believe how sociable I was. They said I should come hang out with them more, so I will! Bad news: they all live clear across town- a nice 40 minute drive one way. I was hurting by the time I got home (3:10). So today I am going to take it easy until the concert. (Concert is the season opener tonight.)

An odd thing happened this weekend though. I had three first dates lined up: Friday night, Saturday morning for coffee, Sunday night late.... I went on the Friday date. This guy said he's 6'7"... I know what 6'8" looks like, so this guy wasn't fooling me when he walked up looking shorter. He was maybe 6'5". I was also not impressed with the gut that obscures his vision of his own feet (keep your profile pictures current!!!). We actually had a really nice time, but I very aware of my personal space bubble. He goes for the kiss goodnight and I went for a handshake, so we laughed and hugged instead (awkwardly) and then I went home. I'm shallow enough that I will let physical appearance cancel out opportunity to get to know someone better. Despite having a nice time, I'm not interested. So the strange thing that went down is that the Saturday date cancelled, saying he's suddenly going out of town, and then the Sunday date cancels, saying he has his daughter for the weekend after all... Is it just coincidence or am I a man-repeller? (Probably karma catching up to me.) Unfortunately I was really looking forward to the Sunday night guy.

Saturday morning guy- no big loss there. (That's the guy who asked if I would ever be open to relocating to a different part of town and then expressed an interest in having me be a new mother to his kid--- this is all before we've actually met. I was totally creeped out by this and threw up some major red flags, letting him know that slow is the way to go, and let's just see how coffee goes before we put the cart before the horse.) I'm actually relieved he cancelled, come to think of it. Where do all these weirdos come from?

As brutal as I am about the people I date, I wonder what they're saying about me. I'm sure I come off as a crazy case to some of them. I'm tenacious when I see something I want- I don't give up easily at all and that might come off looking like crazy I guess. I think it's one of those ingrained habits from childhood- my parents put me in every possible sport for girls, except field hockey and horse jumping. I did figure skating, basketball, softball, soccer, swimteam, you name it. If it had a competitive nature to it, I was in it, and I found that I don't like to lose. If you're not first, you're last. (I don't really believe that anymore but sometimes it gets the better of me.)

Hope you're all having a wonderful holiday weekend!

Quickie Update...

Small GungirlTM Shooting Big Gun

Uploaded 13 February 2008 by KrispieKomrad

Abbreviated update today, as I got derailed by stuff at home... I'll try to catch up a bit tonight/tomorrow.
Managed to get together with Matt64 yesterday, and I had an absolute blast. Matt and I blundered through most of the World at War co-op campaign, shooting unruly Axis AI from the Pacific to Berlin. It was awesome to game again with him, and I had so much fun the time went by quickly; it seemed like we only started and it was time to pack up. Matt started out by brutally kicking my ass in competitive co-op, too. Luckily, I was able to find a little bit of a groove, getting some really high (for me) scores. Today, I'll be heading off to see Mum at the nursing home, spending most of the day there with her.

One gamer's lament: 'I'm 32, and it saddens me that I'm getting older than many of the the characters I play in video games. At least I'll always have him...'
To which I say: Wait until you're 48, sucker. Besides, it isn't all fast reflexes...

I Hadn't Thought of It This Way

I finally bought Red Dead Redemption. I'm only a short way in, but I'd agree with the great reviews it's getting. (And I'd be playing a lot more if we didn't have out-of-town guests this weekend.)

After dinner last night, I came to the man cave to play a bit. My 12-year-old daughter walked in as Marston was galloping down the trail toward Hanging Rock. She asked the name of the game. I told her, and she replied, "Red Dead Redemption is Barbie Horse Adventures for men." I kinda see her point.

Review from a drunken asshole: Metroid other M

Metroid other M takes the female gender back a thousand years by pitting Samus against her quest against martians in the typical fashion but adding all sorts of shallow bullshit like refusing to shoot super missiles because of apparent daddy issues. I mean you do control somebody who has saved the galaxy multiple times but now you suddenly care for this pack of losers so much that you feel the need to not even use the good weapons because you "want to impress the boys?". And the constant exposition describing the need of Samus to thumbs down her commander because she is a girl is so fucking shallow that it makes me want to grow a vagina just to kick the developers of this game in the face.
The gameplay is bullshit. the mechanics sometimes work but even then everything feels like a grind. It lacks the adrenaline rush of a God of War title and the consistency that a Metroid game should have.
I give this game a fucking thumbs down.
